Indian Businessman Conned Goods Worth Ugx, 267M by Ugandans, Kenyans

The Uganda Criminal Investigations Department in collaboration with Interpol have made a success in the fraud case involving a businessman based in India, that was conned goods worth Ugx 267M, on October 6, 2023.

According to Uganda Police and Interpol, the victim identified as Surya Parkash, the Chief Executive of Kutch Chemical Industries LTD, supplied a consignment of 104 containers of caustic soda (Sodium hydroxide) to a number of companies between December 12, 2022, and April 22, 2023.

“The companies in question were listed as Abby Chemicals East Africa Ltd, Innospec Ltd, Akoki Investments Agency Ltd, CJP Chemicals Ltd and Unatral Free Zone SMC Uganda Ltd, ordered for the consignment which was delivered through the port of Mombasa between January 31, 2023 and May 15, 2023.

Interpol and Police noted that, immediately the last container was off loaded at the port, the consignees who had not paid for the shipment went off grid and detached all communications with the supplier.

“The Businessman flew in to Kenya launched a complaint. Our team of investigators keenly worked on the case, and on Friday, October 6, 2023, they managed to trace the consignments to Uganda,” Interpol and Uganda Police noted.

They added that, 7,420 bags equivalent to seven containers of the product was recovered at Liberty Internal Container depot, a logistical company located along Bweyogerere industrial area in Kampala.

Police revealed that, efforts to recover the rest and arrests of the suspects are still on going.

Caustic soda is used as a reagent in laboratories as well as a cleansing agent.
