A housemaid now faces a 40 year jail sentence over torturing a four year old toddler in her care.
Precious Tumuhirwe, a 37-year-old housemaid pleaded guilty to charges of torturing the four-year-old.
The incident, which caused shocked among the local community, took place in Kikoko Zone, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District on December 26, 2024.
Appearing before Kira Chief Magistrate Shallon Niwaha, Precious Tumuhirwe, a 37-year-old housemaid pleaded guilty to charges of torturing the four-year-old.
Tumuhirwe faced charges of torture for the December 27, 2024 attack that happened at Kikoko Zone, Namataba Cell, Kirinya Ward in Wakiso District.
She admitted to causing bodily harm to the child after the young girl soiled her pants.
CCTV footage showed Tuhuhirwe torturing a 4-year-old girl inside a bathroom outstretching the child’s limbs – with the girl crying out in pain, with visible blood flowing from her body.
Tumuhirwe had been employed as a housemaid by Michael Mwesigwa, a single father raising his children after separating from their mother about two years ago. Tumuhairwe had worked in the same household for four years.
According to police reports, the victim is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya hospital.
She also experienced physical and psychological trauma, fearing people and crying whenever someone tried to talk to her.
During the court proceedings state attorney Kate Basuta emphasized the severity of the case highlighting the victim’s age and vulnerability.
The state attorney also pointed out that Tumuhirwe showed no remorse for her actions, fleeing the scene instead of seeking help for the victim.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire stated that Tumuhirwe will face charges of aggravated torture.
“We condemn all forms of violence, particularly against children. We urge the public to report any suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station,” Owoyesigyire said.
The community and child rights advocates are calling for justice and stringent measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
