Heavy rains have affected the ongoing rehabilitation road works on Nabilatuk-Lorengechora and Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat under the Ugx 1 billion grant that was sent to the district.

This was revealed by the Ag. District Engineer, Iiko Elijah, during a joint monitoring of the District Executive Committee members and the technical team.

According to Engineer Iiko, the 24.2 km of work on the Nabilatuk-Lorengechora road stalled following the onset of the rains, which affected the grading work that had been done earlier.

He highlighted a number of other challenges that delayed the work, including the lack of a compactor, the withdrawal of road equipment that had been borrowed from the neighboring district before the district received its grader and wheel loader, and the delayed release of the remaining Ugx 500 million.

Nabilatuk District received Ugx 1 billion under the rehabilitation grant for maintenance of roads; Ugx 450 million was allocated for Nabilatuk-Lorengechora Road and Ugx 450 million for Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat Road, while the remaining 15% is for operations and maintenance.

The District Chairperson, Hon. Lokol Paul, cited a 9-kilometer stretch of heavy black soil, which requires a lot of work, emphasizing the need to dump enough murram in those sections of the road. Currently, the works ongoing on Nabilatuk-Lorengechora Road include the dumping of murram while installing 12 lines of 900-millimeter culverts, while repairs to Longaroi Bridge are still pending.

The Principal Assistant Secretary, Anyakun Paul Jovic, stated that the Works department has been overstretched since equipment and materials are needed at both sites, with the works ongoing concurrently on the two roads.

He called for better planning in the future to enable the timely execution of work.

However, he added that with the grader and a wheel loader at the district, work is likely to improve in the following years, with projects completed on schedule.
