The government has commended Ugandans who are spearheading the ongoing Parliamentary Exhibition Campaign being conducted on social media.

While addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, welcomed the campaign, describing it as a strong force to combat fraud in government.

He urged the group to not only stop at exhibiting rot in parliament but also to extend their campaign to cover other government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Minister Baryomunsi confirmed that several allegations of fraud and financial mismanagement in parliament exposed during the campaign have been picked for further investigation.

“The money that we spend to run the government is tax payers’ money, and exposing what happens within our ministries is healthy as far as the NRM government is concerned,” Dr. Baryomunsi said.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Betty Olive Kamya, the Inspector General of Government, said they were set to launch a special investigation into the reported irregularities within the operation of the Parliament of Uganda.

She said that her office has received various petitions from ordinary Ugandans demanding an investigation regarding the reported fraud at parliament.

“We have received several whistleblower accounts of the inner workings of Parliament,” IGG Kamya said.

In February 2024, a section of Ugandans on social media conducted an advocacy campaign on X under the hashtag “Uganda Parliamentary Exhibition,” in which several allegations of financial mismanagement were recorded.

During this particular campaign, the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), MP Mathias Nsamba Mpuuga, was accused of fraudulently being awarded the sum of Ugx500 million as a reward for his service, among others.

Mpuuga has since been ordered by the National Unity Platform Leader Robert Kyagulanyi, to return the money and also resign from his role as Parliamentary Commissioner for indulging himself in a corruptible manner amounting to an abuse of office.
