Joint security forces operating in Kidepo Valley National Park have successfully neutralized four illegal poachers believed to be South Sudanese nationals.

The incident occurred at Moru-Etom Hills within the park on Friday, July 19, 2024, following a planned intelligence-led operation.

Security authorities said that the operation was launched after receiving reports of illegal hunting activities within the park.

“The poachers, a group of ten individuals, had already killed two buffaloes when they were intercepted by the security forces. In the ensuing exchange of fire, four of the poachers were fatally wounded,” a local authority said.

According to the authorities, alongside the poachers’ demise, the security team recovered a cache of weapons, including four SMG rifles, ten arrows, and five bows.

“This successful operation not only halted the illegal hunting but also removed dangerous firearms from the park, ensuring the safety of wildlife and visitors alike,” the authority noted.

In response to the incident, park authorities have intensified monitoring efforts to prevent further incursions by illegal hunters.

According to Richard Muhabwe, the Chief Warden of Kidepo National Park, continued vigilance will safeguard the park’s ecosystem and uphold the safety and experience of tourists visiting Kidepo Valley National Park.
