Former New Vision Journalist Shot Dead Near Home in Wakiso

Veteran Ugandan journalist Joe Nam, 55, a former features reporter with New Vision (Vision Group), has been shot dead by an unidentified masked gunman near his home in Kawanda Central, Nabweru division, Wakiso district.

The police said the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, April 19th, 2026, at around 1 a.m. when a masked assailant opened fire on Nam near his residence before fleeing the scene.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, investigations have already been initiated and are probing the motive behind the targeted shooting. However, no arrests have been made so far.

“The body has been taken to the mortuary at Mulago Referral Hospital for a postmortem as part of the investigations. The other teams are on ground to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and motive,” he said.

Colleagues and media practitioners have expressed shock, describing Nam as a “great journalist” known for his professionalism and long contribution to Ugandan media.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family soon.
