The Turkish multi-sport club, Fenerbahçe has parted ways with former Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho after a devastating 1-0 Champions League result in a match against Benfica on Wednesday.

In a brief six sentence statement made public via social media on Thursday, Fenerbahçe announced a mutual agreement ending the 62-year-old’s twelve month stay at the Club as their First technical director.

“We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career,” the Club said on X.

Mourinho’s departure comes two days after the Turkish club failed to qualify for the Champions League phase following defeat to Benfica in the play-off round.

José Mourinho, renowned for his tactical mastery and charismatic personality, first took charge of Chelsea in 2004, leading them to multiple Premier League titles before departing in 2007, later managing Manchester United from 2016 to 2018 where he secured the Europa League and League Cup, and eventually joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, aiming to restore the club’s competitiveness before parting ways in 2021.

He was officially presented as Fenerbahçe’s new manager on June 2nd 2024 at a fan ceremony held at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul. He signed a two-year contract with high hopes of ending the club’s league title drought.

For Fenerbahce, the defeat is a major blow, both competitively and financially.

The club, which finished second in the Turkish league last season, will now have to regroup and focus on a strong campaign in the Europa League while continuing its domestic push.

Unfortunately, the troubled Portuguese sportsman will stay crashed out of Fenerbahce during this time.
