Balimwezo Joins Hotly Contested Kampala Mayoral Race

Balimwezo joins DP's Beatrice Mao and the incumbent Erias Lukwago of People's front for freedom and as nomination continues other independent candidates could come on board for the top Kampala seat.

The National Unity platform (NUP) Electoral Commission has duly nominated outgoing member of parliament for Nakawa East, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga for the position of Kampala Lord Mayor.

Speaking shortly after the nomination at the Independent Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda on September 5th, 2025, Balimwezo assured the people of his capability and enough experience to make Kampala a model city in Africa.

“If we had good leadership, Kampala would be the best city in Africa, as an expert in local government i can make Kampala great, I was lc1 chairman at 19 years, councilor lc5 then when I was Mayor Nakawa I was voted as the best performing Mayor,” Balimwezo said.

The NUP deputy spokerperson Waiswa Mufumbiro said that NUP has fronted engineer Balimwezo for Mayor so that they can together change the city status.

“We have successfully nominated Balimwezo and we are looking out for the people of Kampala and asking all of them to vote Balimwezo for a better city that all Ugandans will be proud of, ” Mufumbiro said.

However the Regional elections officer in charge of Kampala electoral region, Jennifer kyobutungi strongly warned that some candidates stand a risk of being disqualified if they hold rallies before being approved.

“No campaigns until the electoral roadmap is harmonized and we are strongly warning all candidates whether nominated or not that please desist from holding rallies and campaiging,” Kyobutungi said.
