The Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Dorothy Kisaka, has said that the preparations for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit are almost complete.

Kisaka, together with the NAM summit task force, while inspecting the road works in Makindye division on January 7, 2024, made the statement based on the nearly completed work in different sectors of the country, including the renovation and construction of the roads around Kampala and other parts of the county.

“Preparations for the summit are almost complete; all road works, drainage, lighting, and painting will be done by tomorrow, January 8, 2024, and will be inspected by NAM chairperson Lucky Nakyobe,” Kisaka said.

She, however, noted that the removal of street children will be a gradual process since there are still pull and push factors that are yet to be addressed.

Uganda will be hosting the 19th NAM summit under the chairmanship of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni from January 15–20, 2024, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala under the theme Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence.

President Museveni earlier revealed that the summit will provide a platform for global cooperation and solidarity and for advancing common goals.

What is NAM?

The notion of NAM was adopted during the Afro-Asian conference of April 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia, with the view of advancing the interests of developing countries and guiding the operations of the new international bloc.

NAM is currently comprised of 120 member states, of which Uganda is one.
