The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is finalizing updates to its electoral roadmap ahead of the 2025/2026 general elections, following recent adjustments made by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
Speaking during the party’s weekly media briefing held on April 9, 2025 at Uganda House, Sharon Arach Oyat, the UPC spokesperson confirmed that UPC’s revised roadmap aligns with the IEC’s national electoral timetable.
Oyat reminded the public, especially UPC members in the public service, that the deadline for resignation for those intending to participate in the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees elections is Monday, April 28, 2025.
She explained that the nomination of village special interest group’s committee candidates for the Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Youth is scheduled for Monday 2nd June 2025 while polling for the said committees will start on 16th June 2025 accordingly.
“UPC is calling upon all members who fall under that category (SIGs) to take note of the earmarked dates and prepare accordingly especially the 28th of April 2025, which is the deadline for resignation by public servants wishing to participate in SIGs Committees elections,” Oyat stated.
She noted that this activity is very key as some leaders have, in the recent past lost offices due to noncompliance with this requirement of resignation.
“We would not want any leader to follow suit of the same when there is ample time to avert it,” she warned.
Arach encouraged UPC leaders at all party structure levels especially the youth and PWDs leaders to massively mobilise and register potential members, who are showing interest to carry the UPC flag in the forthcoming elections of SIGs Committees which are due in June 2025.
“In the circumstances where there is more than one aspiring candidate in an electoral area, the Party will first consider the means of consensus in arriving at a flag bearer, she said addsing that where consensus has failed, the Party will organize free and fair primaries in such electoral areas for members to elect a candidate of their choice to represent UPC in the special interest groups committee elections.
Oyat rallied members to continue mobilization and registration of new party members, an initiative officially launched by UPC President Hon Jimmy Akena in February 2025.
The UPC s roadmap come as political parties across Uganda ramp up their preparation for 2026 general election with focus on inclusion, internal democracy and strategic planning, the UPC is positioning its self as a significant contender in Uganda political arena.
