The police have reported 10 people dead and 22 others injured in a tragic accident that occurred on the Kampala-Fort Portal Highway in Ngezi, Kyenjojo District.
According to the Rwenzori West police spokesperson, Vicent Twesige, the tragic accident was caused by reckless driving.
He explained that the accident happened at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday when a taxi with registration number UBR 800S, traveling from Fort Portal to Kampala, crashed into another, registration UBK 017N, heading in the opposite direction.
“It is a painful reminder of the dangers of ignoring road safety rules,” Twesige said.
Emergency response teams, including the police, Red Cross, and hospital staff, provided assistance to the victims in the form of ambulances to evacuate the victims to different hospitals that were provided.
The victims were transported to various hospitals, including Fort Portal Referral, Kyenjojo Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital in Kasese.
The police urged all road users to drive responsibly and avoid reckless behavior, emphasizing that lives are valuable.
“We urge all road users to be cautious and responsible behind the wheel,” he said.
Authorities also extended their gratitude to the emergency teams and hospitals for their swift response in evacuating and treating the victims.
