The residents of Zombo from 15 lower local government administrative units in the district are planning to hold a peaceful demonstration over bad roads that have not been worked on for many years.
The demonstrators are planning to match to Zombo district office for a major speech on the state of roads and their consequences on the community.
Several residents around the district have supported the plan, citing the poor condition of roads and footbridges, adding that, road closures during the rainy season and excessive dust during the dry season have raised serious concerns.
Sam Rwothomio, a politician and farmer said that, he will lead the walk under the slogan Zombo roads matter—it’s time for action, not words.
“With all these vehicles going to the major customs and immigration centres, namely Padea and VURRA, the revenue collected is in billions but for all these years, the roads can’t be tarmacked,” Rwothomio said.
He added that, they demand the tarmacking of the 119-kilometre road from Nebbi to Vurra.
Rwothomio noted that, trade is being affected by the bad roads in Zombo district, and people are losing lives in accidents.
He called upon the Minister of Works and Transport to have a meeting to address people’s demands and report on the progress of the September 2022 road survey.
Rwothomio said that, the demonstration aims to hold the government accountable for unfulfilled promises to rehabilitate roads managed by UNRA and the district.
