Police in Yumbe, West Nile has arrested seven people for engaging in examination malpractice in the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.
The suspects named include an invigilator who was sent to supervise examinations at Nampita Secondary School and seven teachers from the same school.
According to Jennifer Kalule Musamba, the Principal Public Relations Officer (PPRO) at Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), the group is charged with possession of unauthorized material and disturbance in an examination room.
She identified the suspects as Julius Caeser Obbo, an Economics teacher, Josephine Angukoru, a Biology teacher, Boniface Ntibiringirwa, Godwin Wasswa, James Bamukabire, Emmanuel Okello, and Sadam Hussein, all teachers of Nampita S.S. and Oryema Bosco the invigilator.
Musamba said that, the suspects committed the crime on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
“The suspects accessed the examination hall with power banks, smart phones and a laptop under the pretext of charging them, an act which was very suspicious to the scout, causing her to report to police,” she said.
She added that, preliminary investigations indicate that, the smart phone for one of the teachers, identified as Julius Caeser Obbo, contained answers for the biology practical examination.
According to UNEB rules and guidelines on malpractice, anyone found guilty is liable to conviction, or to a fine not exceeding the approximate sum of UGX 40 million or a term of imprisonment not exceeding ten years or both.
