The G20 Summit, scheduled for September 9-10, 2023, will feature international dignitaries including US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who will fly in on September 8, 2023. The 18th G20 Summit is scheduled to take place at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

The G20 Summit is a recurring global conference that convenes leaders from the most influential economies worldwide to engage in discussions and collaborate on matters about the global economy.

However, statements from the Chinese diplomacy and the Russian government confirm the probable absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin at this meeting.

According to Josh Lipsky, the Senior Director of The Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Centre, the forthcoming G20 meeting in India will priorities a number of pressing issues, including the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, environmental concerns, and the issue of global inequality.

He added that, given that Xi and Putin are well-known world leaders, their absence has major consequences. It is expected that their absence will negatively impact the summit and might hinder progress on a number of important issues included in the agenda.

”The upcoming G20 summit in India will focus on various urgent matters, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, concerns related to the environment, and the global inequality problem. The absence of Xi and Putin carries notable implications, given their status as prominent global leaders. Their absence is anticipated to hurt the summit, potentially impeding advancements on several crucial matters outlined in the agenda,” Lipsky said.

The Indian government said that Jinping and Putin promised to attend the summit virtually. However, the government’s statement noted that, it is unclear if they will do so.

The G20 is a forum for the world’s 20 largest economies. It is seen as a key forum for international cooperation on economic and financial issues.

The G20 summit is expected to address key issues such as global economic recovery, climate change, food security, terrorism, cyber security, and migration. The global economy is still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, and leaders will need to accelerate recovery and prevent a backslide. Addressing climate change requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to its impacts.
