Winnie Atyang appointed new Lady Cranes 7s coach

Winnie Atyang has been appointed the new Lady Cranes 7s Team Manager by the Uganda Rugby Union Executive Committee and is set to lead the Rugby Cranes 7s to play in the World Series.

This development was confirmed by the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) Executive Committee on Friday 28th June 2024.

The URU Chief Executive Officer, Isaac Lutwama Nsubuga, announced that Winnie will assume her position on 1st July 2024, saying that he expects that her experience will be useful in inspiring the group.

“She is no stranger to this team and we hope her experience will be put to good use in motivating the team and helping the girls realize their dream to step up and play in the World Series and reinforce their place as one of Africa’s best,” Lutwama said.

Uganda Rugby Union hopes to leverage her experience to empower and build a stronger Lady Cranes 7s program as they continue on their High-Performance program.

Atyang was a member of the team that participated in the 2009 7s Rugby World Cup in Dubai and has previously played for the Lady Cranes XVs & 7s teams.

Winnie has held various positions in the past, such as captain and acting team manager for Thunderbirds Rugby Club.

She also holds certificates in Sports Management (SAC), Advanced Sports Management (ASMC) from the International Olympic Committee, First Aid in Rugby (L1), and ACTIVATE (World Rugby).

Currently, Atyang is enrolled in the Rugby Africa LUNEX Sports Training Management Program, which is being offered on a second basis by the Uganda Rugby Union.

Atyang joins URU after serving on the Executive Committee of Kyadondo Rugby Club as a Women’s Representative.

According to her profile, she is a self-motivated businesswoman and has run several projects notably the Winnie Atyang Foundation clinics and Naguru Young Mothers Back to School project supporting rugby-playing young mothers to realize the purpose of returning to school to attain qualifications and support their livelihood ahead.
