A Uganda proverb “Water always flows where it has ever flown before” explains how it may end for Uganda Cranes who have been pitted in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with the desert foxes who humiliated them in a 2-1 victory in Cameroon.
According to sports experts, Algeria’s manifest in group G puts Uganda’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at stake since the desert foxes may automatically flow where they have ever flown during the match in Cameroon.
The other teams in Group G include Guinea, Mozambique, Botswana and Somalia.
According to the organizers of the FIFA world Cup qualifiers, a total of 54 countries have been drawn into nine groups and each composed of six teams.
The winner of each group will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the four best group runners-up will participate in play-offs to determine which team will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
The Federation of Uganda Football Association which also confirmed the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will see participation of teams increase from the current 32 to 48 which will consequently lead to the increase in number of teams from CAF (Africa). The teams will increase from five to nine or possibly 10 depending on the outcome of the intercontinental playoffs.
Uganda Cranes was effectively eliminated from the FIFA Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers following a 1-1 draw with neighbors (Kenya) at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
In truth, Uganda’s fate was sealed and stamped after a comfortable 3-0 Mali win against Rwanda in Kigali a few hours later.
However, the chance is back for Uganda Cranes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA world cup in case their gods intervene to prevail over Somalia, Mozambique, Botswana, Guinea and prayerfully Algeria.
