Arsenal start the new season with a Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
On Sunday, Arsenal trounced Manchester City 4-1 during a penalty shootout to win the Community Shield after the match that had ended 1-1 after extra time.
The match was a tight affair, with both teams creating chances that saw City take the lead in the 72nd minute through Cole Palmer, but Arsenal equalized in the 101st minute through Leandro Trossard.
The game went to penalties, and Arsenal were the more clinical side, scoring all four of their penalties. City missed three of their penalties, with Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri both failing to convert as Odegard, Saka, Trossard, and Fabio Viera all scored.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s Head coach, says it was a great win and a huge motivation for his team for the new season.
“It feels great. I don’t think it gets much better than winning a trophy in Wembley against the best team in the world and doing it the way we’ve done it. It’s encouraging,” Arteta said.
“It’s great; that’s why we are here—to win trophies for this football club and make it successful. Just the joy of seeing so many happy and proud people and the connection of doing it again for our supporters in Wembley feels very different, and that’s great,” Arteta added.
The win is a good start for Arsenal ahead of the new season, and it will give them confidence that they can challenge for the Premier League title.
