The United Nations World Food Programme is exploring partnerships with key stakeholders in the private sector to mitigate food insecurity and climate change in Uganda.
This was announced by the WFP Country Director, Abdirhaman Meygag during a breakfast meeting held at Onomo Hotel in Kampala, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
He says the partnership will create markets for local produce that will be procured directly from the local dealers.
“In the past, we have had to import dry produce from neighboring countries at a high price, thus limiting the quantity purchased,” said Meygag.
Steven Asiimwe, the Executive Director of Private Sector Foundation Uganda said the partnership will offer different opportunities to traders.
On climate change, Magnus Rasmussen, the WFP Head of Partnerships Development, said they are providing solar stoves to reduce the effects of tree cutting and charcoal burning.
“We have also come up with tree planting and reforestation programmes to help replace the destroyed trees as a result of charcoal burning and firewood cutting.” Rasmussen added.
The meeting was attended by farmer groups, banks, and other partners, including Hima Cement and Tororo Cement, among others.
