The deputy speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, has recognized the need to invest more in Ugandan sports, citing that the transformational potential of sports is undeniable.
He made the remarks as he presided over a football match between the Parliament of Uganda team and the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Legends at St. Mary’s Kitende Football Stadium on February 12, 2023.
“It is our strategy now as a country to invest in sports infrastructure because the return on investment is really huge,” Tayebwa said.
The football game led by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin ended in an 8-goal thriller, with the visiting team, UEFA, scoring 7 goals. Parliament’s only goal was scored by the Government Chief Whip, Hon. Hamson Obua.
The state minister for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang congratulated the winning team and promised to improve the parliament team for a better display next time.
“Kudos to the UEFA Legends team, you were a better side and deserved such a resounding victory. This challenge has taught us a lesson, and in our next encounter, you will find us in better shape. Enjoy your stay in the Pearl of Africa,” Ogwang said.
The UEFA officials jetted into the country for the game on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
