The opposition National Unity Platform Party (NUP) has maintained that they intend to cause no chaos during their ongoing regional mobilization drive that kicked off from Mbarara City on Monday, August 28th.
In a statement issued by the NUP’s Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya said they don’t intend to disorganize businesses in cities and towns where they are meant to tour on condition that police remain calm.
A Nexus Media reporter on the ground in Mbarara City said despite security deployment in the area, NUP leaders led by the Party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, and hundreds of supporters were seen matching on major streets without any interference from the security.
“We don’t intend to cause any chaos; we want to follow our scheduled Programme and move to the other district,” said Rubongoya.
While opening NUP’s offices along Makhan Singh Street, Kyagulanyi told Ugandans to keep awake in the revolutionary struggle against the NRM regime.
Before opening the offices, Kyagulanyi appeared for an hour-long radio talk show on the Endigyito radio station, where he delivered his anti-regime messages.
Kyagulanyi also conducted a public rally at Global High School playgrounds, where he encouraged opposition supporters not to give up on the anti-regime struggle.
On Tuesday, NUP officials will proceed to Fort Portal, where they will open their offices, conduct a radio talk show, and later address a public rally.
On Monday, during the weekly security briefings, Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga cautioned NUP officials to engage with the area commanders to harmonize how to conduct businesses without any interference.
