Aruu falls situated in Acholi sub region in the northern part of Uganda in Pader District, has an attractive view of flowing water that goes downstream on jagged rocks that make up for an extremely beautiful scenery.
For one to reach the falls which are located along the Gulu-Kitgum high way, 386km from Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda needs a 4 to 6 hours’ drive.
William Sam Oyec, a tour guide at the water falls revealed that, the waterfalls are made up of several streams with a roaring sound, flowing from seven rocks that is; Rwanga, Awilo Yaa, Akweyo, Wang Akiye, Lacee, Okello Gem, Lanya Kweyo.
Oyec added that, the seven streams form a step like formation that facilitates for a seamless down flow of water from River Agago.
Oyec said that the Aruu falls are within a forest with rocks which make a great activity of rock climbing and hiking adventure enjoyable.
The tour guide however noted that, the area is still not known very well, but still attracts over 100 tourists most of whom are from outside Uganda and school children who come for study purposes.
In his explanation, Oyec stated some of the activities that revelers and tourists can do and enjoy at the falls.
Water viewing which will give you a peaceful feel as you climb downstream on the rocks is one of the activities to enjoy. Oyec however advised that rock climbing should be done during the dry season when the rocks are not slippery, in order to get a closer feel of the falls.
Picnics and camping at the falls is amazing given the rocky grounds that offers an incomparable experience with the cool breeze and a generous view of the Acholi-Lango region.
Nature and community walks while viewing the forest and different bird species, appreciating the culture in the region along with the guide is another incredible experience.
Birding which includes viewing horn-bills, weaver birds, stone chart birds, African wagtail and many more is astonishing.
Swimming in the pool down the falls is breathtaking, while the photography is a great experience given the unique and beautiful nature of the falls.
According to the State Minister of Tourism, Martin Bahinduka Mugarra, a visit to the Aruu Falls is worthwhile and the scenic grandeur of the falls makes them yet another Uganda’s natural wonders.
Bahinduka further revealed how Aruu falls is among the tourist attractions in Uganda to be developed by the government in the next Financial Year.
“I thank the Government of Uganda which continues to support the tourism sector and through the funding availed, a number of tourism sites are up for development in the next Financial Year, Aruu Falls included, I also commend the work of private players like Odonga Otto who has established accommodation facilities, among other amenities to ease visitors’ stay at Aruu” Bahinduka revealed during his recent visit to Aruu falls in the Explore the North Campaign.
