UWEC to Establish Four Satellite Regional Conservation Centres

201

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is set to establish four regional satellite conservation centres.

The centres are to be established within the four Central Forest Reserves of Mbale, Ruti in Mbarara, Abera in Gulu, and Oruha in Kyenjojo.

This stemmed from the memorandum of understanding signed between the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) on August 18, 2023.

Dr. James Musinguzi, UWEC Executive Director, said, “TThe Memorandum of Understanding is a good example of collaborative forest management.” This is an opportunity for UWEC and NFA to work with local governments and educate the public about the value of conserving biodiversity and co-existence.”

The NFA Executive Director, Obong Okello, expressed his confidence that the allocation of land to UWEC is a non-consumptive utilisation of natural resources. “We are not going to cut the trees; we are going to conserve them, as well as the wildlife occupying the habitat.” He Said.

Each centre will measure a maximum of sixty hectares, respectively. And this was done for purposes of forest restoration, wildlife conservation, and the promotion of tourism in Uganda.
