The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has set up a science laboratory to carry out specific tests. The laboratory’s state-of-the-art facility and expert team have been conducting a comprehensive range of tests to safeguard the interests of both businesses and consumers, with the aim of ensuring the quality and compliance of a wide range of consumer products.

According to the URA statement posted on the official handle X, the laboratory’s latest report indicates that the tests carried out cover a diverse set of parameters, including hydroquinone content in cosmetics, material identification and composition analysis, color content, refractive index, beta-carotene content, free fatty acid, and cloud point for edible oils, as well as fabric content and microscopy for textiles.

“These comprehensive tests are crucial in ensuring that the products entering the market meet the required standards and regulations,” the statement read in part.

According to the URA, the laboratory further tests the alcohol strength, total soluble solids, sugar content, and acidity for fruit juices and beverages, as well as the alcohol content, specific gravity, and methanol detection for alcoholic beverages.

“By conducting these analyses, we can help businesses classify their products accurately, determine the appropriate valuation, and ensure compliance with the relevant regulations,” URA officials noted.

URA further stated that the laboratory’s turnaround time for these tests ranges from three to six days, depending on the number of samples tested per batch.

URA officials added that this efficient service allows businesses to quickly address any issues and make necessary adjustments to their products before they reach consumers. They added that the work done by the URA Science Laboratory is priceless in maintaining the integrity of the Ugandan market.

The URA Science Laboratory’s role in testing and verifying a wide range of consumer products remains a crucial component in safeguarding the well-being of the nation’s residents and the integrity of its markets.
