The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF)-Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) has officially commenced construction on a new commercial complex in Arua City.

The commercial complex aims to enhance accessibility to its services for members and the wider community in Arua City. It will house the Arua branch and feature various commercial units available for rent.

During the ground-breaking ceremony on August 15, 2024, Charles Ichogor, the Resident District Commissioner of Arua City, praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his forward-thinking leadership in professionalizing the military and establishing WSACCO.

“The choice of Arua City as the investment site among several potential locations will serve as a hub for knowledge sharing and capacity building,” Ichogor said.

He encouraged the city leadership to foster partnerships between local SACCOs and WSACCO, enabling them to adopt best practices in leadership and management for enhanced growth.

Col Joseph Freddy Onata, CEO of WSACCO, said that the new construction will not only transform the city’s landscape but also create employment opportunities for local residents involved in construction and material supply.

“The establishment of the Arua branch is a strategic move to strengthen community ties and expand service offerings, including savings and loans,” he said.

He added that by situating the branch outside military barracks, WSACCO will integrate more closely with the community and facilitate collaboration with other SACCOs, allowing for shared experiences and learning.

Lt. Col. Allan Kitanda, WSACCO Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, commended the collaborative efforts of Arua city officials in expediting document processing and approving architectural plans.

He lauded the WSACCO management for effectively implementing the strategic plans set by the board.

Kitanda also announced WSACCO’s initiative to expand its common bond, inviting select members of the public to engage in business with the cooperative.

Lt. Col. Nathan Bainomugisha, representing the Commander of the 4th Infantry Division, praised WSACCO for its strategic decision to develop the commercial complex in Arua City Centre.

He acknowledged the high-quality services provided by WSACCO, emphasizing the convenience and affordability of its expanding branch network and digital channels.

Bainomugisha pledged support for WSACCO’s operations in Arua and committed to ongoing member mobilization efforts.

The groundbreaking ceremony was well-attended, with notable figures including the Arua City Mayor, Wadri Anyakun, City Clerk Kyasanku, RPC West Nile SSP Ochama, and members of the Board of Directors, among others.
