The Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) Air Force Deputy Commander, Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, has died in the bathroom at his residence in Entebbe.

Gen Kigundu’s demise, which occurred at his official residence in Entebbe on Sunday evening, March 31, 2024, was announced in a statement by the UPDF Spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces inform the public of the untimely demise of Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, the Deputy Commander of the UPDF Air Force, which occurred in the evening of today, March 31, 2024, at his official residence in Entebbe,” Kulayigye stated.

Kulayigye said that Brig Gen Kigundu was well all day until evening, adding that the cause of his death has not yet been established.

“The UPDF fraternity and the Uganda People’s Defence Air Force will miss Brigadier General Kigundu at this time when his services were most needed to continue strengthening our air force capabilities,” he said.

Several people have been reported to have died in a similar situation in the bathrooms; for instance, in 2020, the UPDF lost Brig Gen Victor Twesigye, who slid and fell in a bathroom, calling for the need to find out the root cause of such incidents.

In that same year, Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala, the former Mayor of Kampala Capital City, also tragically passed away due to an intestinal obstruction after he had an accident in the bathroom, fell, and was rushed to International Hospital Kampala (IHK), where he was pronounced dead on September 26, 2020.
