UPC to hold party primaries this month

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) publicist, Arach Oyat Sharon has announced that the party primaries will be held on August 16, 2025. “These will include elections for Members of Parliament, LCV Chairpersons, City Mayors, City Division Mayors and Municipal Mayors,” she said on August 6, 2025 in a statement to the media after the party’s weekly media briefing held at Uganda House..

She added that the primaries for district, city division, municipal and division councilors as well as sub county division chairpersons and councilors will be held on August 18th, 2025.

“As per the Executive Order No. 001/2025 of UPC President Hon. Jimmy Akena, village branch executives are included on the parish, Sub County, constituency and district executives as voters for purposes of electing Party flag bearers at various respective positions,” she said.

She explained that in the beginning of the year the party resolved that all members of the party will participate in elections.

“That is why the president issued the executive order. So this is a reminder that all party executives from the village, parish, among others that they are eligible to vote for party members,” she advised.

She pointed out that according to the Party Electoral Commission (PEC), some candidates for various elective positions are unopposed and PEC will officially announce them at an appropriate time.

“The Party calls for calmness in areas where primaries are going to be held, we call for no bribery or violence, we want to assure all aspiring candidates that the Party primaries are going to be peaceful, transparent, free and fair,”.

The party’s communication manager Mzee Faizo explained that UPC elections are held by electoral colleges that include seven members from each village, 12 from each parish and 12 from each sub parish, 13 from each constituency.
