Police in Dokolo district have arrested Oyam district Woman MP Santa Alum Ogwang and two other people for voter bribery in the ongoing Dokolo Woman MP by-elections.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, said MP Santa Alum Ogwang (UPC) and two other people were found engaging in voter bribery in a bid to influence electorates to vote for their candidate, Sarah Nyangkori, who is contesting to be the Dokolo district woman representative on the UPC ticket.

Okema added that the suspects were found in possession of an unspecified huge sum of suspicious money, which they were using to bribe voters.

He added that the trio was interrogated by the police over the allegation, which they denied.

MP Jimmy Akena Obote, the UPC Party President, described the arrest as an intimidation to scare his team from protecting their votes.

Akena wondered which law prohibited anybody from being in possession of money and questioned the motive of the police.

UPC’s Sarah Nyankori is among the other candidates: Dr. Rosemary Alwoc (FDC), Harriet Ageno of NUP, Janet Adong Elau (NRM), and Dr. Akullu Obot, who are contesting to replace the late Cecilia Ogwal as the Dokolo Woman MP.

Early in the day, the Electoral Commission confirmed low voter turnout and delays in the ongoing by-elections.
