The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has urged all stakeholders involved in the transport system to take responsibility for road safety ahead of the festive season.
The UPC party head of communication, Muzeyi Faizo, during the party’s weekly presser on December 11th, 2024, at the party headquarters in Uganda House, emphasised the need for both passengers and drivers to be vigilant and proactive in preventing accidents.
Faizo expressed his appreciation to passengers for exercising their rights and reporting instances of careless and reckless driving.
“This is a good character that will always keep drivers in check. We call upon every passenger and driver to stay vigilant and continue to warn and report these bad incidences,” he said.
He urged the transportation bodies to regulate the industry to prevent issues such as driver fatigue, overloading, and poor vehicle conditions.
“We call upon all governing bodies of public transportation to take keen note of this to reduce road accidents,” he stated.
In the recent traffic accident report, 432 accidents were recorded, with 97 being fatal, 202 being serious, and 133 being minor. Among the 424 victims, 100 lost their lives, while 324 sustained injuries.
The causes of these accidents were attributed to various factors, including speeding and exceeding prescribed speed limits, careless overtaking manoeuvres, and overtaking on blind corners and hills, among others.
