The Uganda Law Society (ULS), through its executive order No. 2 of 2024, has summoned its new representatives to the Judicial Service Commission in a bid to promote transparency and stop unjudicial recruitments.

This has served as a second major directive since Isaac Ssemakadde’s election to office as president of the ULS after the dismissal of the Attorney and Solicitor General from the Council.

Pronouncing the order on October 29, 2024, at the ULS offices at Kissasi, Ssemakadde recalled Ruth Sebatindira and Norah Winyi Matovu, among others, who were unlawfully and unconstitutionally nominated as per the provision of the ULS election regulations of 2016.

In accordance with the law, Ssemakadde said that the Elections Committee will notify the members of the society of the day and place for the election of the society representatives.

“The ULS Council has no later than December 31, 2024, conducted an extraordinary meeting to elect ULS representatives to the JSC and for all other statutory bodies, except ULS representatives to the Law Council who were duly elected,” he said.

He acknowledged the presence of maignant decay and malignant decay and decadence in the judiciary and JSC and vowed to take action against the culprits.

“The ULS shall take drastic measures to halt any judicial recruitment processes that do not adhere to the principles of merit, equality, transparency, and accountability,” Ssemakadde said in the statement.
