The Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga while addressing the presser during the weekly security brief at Naguru Police Headquarters on Monday, July 3, 2023, has advised Ugandans to take caution and remain vigilant while in crowded places like hotels, bars/restaurants, worship places and government buildings.
He said that in 2021, the United Kingdom (UK) had also alerted Uganda about a terror attack which later happened at Kwata Zone in Komamboga Ward, Kawempe Division in Kampala district in October, and at the Central Police Station (CPS) and Parliament Avenue in November of the same year.
“An alert like that does not clearly give the actual details to help us carry out investigations. The terror alert does not advise police that probably, the attack will be at St. Balikudembe market, or a certain taxi park, school, a specific worship place to ease and help in strengthening security. They are just left hanging,” Enanga said.
He however, noted that, security agencies do not take such an advice or terror alert from the UK for granted.
Regardless of UK issuing a warning about terrorists planning to attack Uganda, security at many crowd pulling places has not been tightened to prevent these explosions from reoccurring.
In a travel advisory posted on its website on Sunday, July 02, 2023, the UK government emanated that terrorists were likely to conduct terror attacks in Uganda.
The travel advisory to British citizens in Uganda did not specify the places that the terrorists are aiming at nor the group of the terrorists plotting the attack.
Quite a number of the spot checks around Kampala over the weekend showed that the guards at many gathering places were unaware of the terror alert and they had not intensified their monitoring of security especially at entry and exit points.
“We have not been told about the terror threats, we are doing our usual security check,” Mugerwa a security guard at a night hangout in Najeera said on Sunday evening.
However, the joint security agencies in Uganda continue to assure its citizens that the country is safe but continue to look out for these terrorists.
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) Spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye said that terror threats to Uganda are like those to other countries including the UK, and that they have ably defended the country.
Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga urged Ugandans to remain calm and vigilant during this time.
