Uganda’s Minister for Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, has rejected criticism from the European Parliament over the country’s 15th January, 2026, general elections, describing the resolution as external interference in domestic affairs.
Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Center today, 24th February, 2026, Dr. Baryomunsi defended the credibility of the elections, stating they were largely peaceful, transparent, and fully compliant with Uganda’s legal framework.
“While the European Parliament’s resolution raises concerns about alleged post-election violence and threats to opposition figures and civil society, our position remains clear; the elections were transparent, reflected the will of the Ugandan people, and proceeded without widespread disruption,” Baryomunsi said.
The minister emphasized that while the government is committed to democratic principles, it rejects external interference in its electoral processes.
He highlighted Uganda’s role as a key regional partner in peace and security across East Africa, urging international partners to engage through constructive dialogue rather than issuing condemnations.
Baryomunsi added that isolated post-election incidents are being addressed through established legal mechanisms and called on all parties to exercise restraint to preserve national unity.
The minister also addressed ongoing domestic matters, including the treatment of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose treason case returned to court amid health concerns raised by his family.
“Dr. Besigye is receiving appropriate medical attention in custody, and exaggerated claims about his condition are unhelpful to national stability,” the minister highlighted.
This press briefing comes amid heightened international scrutiny following the January elections, in which President Yoweri Museveni was declared winner by a significant margin, with government spokespersons, including Minister Baryomunsi, consistently rejecting foreign criticism as misinformed and politically motivated.
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance continues to coordinate government communication on electoral integrity and related matters, with the Minister urging citizens to rely on verified official sources for accurate information as discussions surrounding the 2026 elections and their aftermath continue.
As discussions surrounding the elections unfold, authorities say their focus remains on safeguarding national unity, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring stability in the post-election period.
