The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has officially announced that Ugandans can now apply to correct or update their National Identification Cards as part of the ongoing nationwide mass enrollment and renewal exercise.
This update gives citizens the opportunity to fix mistakes or make changes to personal details on their IDs, such as names, residence, parent information, and other personal data.
Speaking at a security press briefing held on July 21, 2025, at Naguru Police Headquarters, Claire Ollam, a communications officer at NIRA, said the service will be provided free of charge if the error was caused by NIRA. It is also aimed at helping those who missed earlier deadlines due to personal challenges or administrative delays.
However, if the changes are not due to NIRA’s fault, applicants will be required to pay a fee of Shs 200,000. Full guidance and instructions are available on the official NIRA website.
“Starting today, Ugandans can officially apply to correct or update their national identification records. If the error is caused by NIRA, it will be corrected free of charge and your ID will be renewed at no cost,” said Ollam.
To make corrections or updates, applicants are required to complete a change or correction form, present their original National ID, and undergo new biometric capture, including a fresh photo. Depending on the nature of the correction, supporting documents such as statutory declarations, deed polls, birth certificates, or court orders may also be required.
The types of changes that can be made include adding or removing names (such as maiden names), correcting spelling mistakes or name order, updating place of residence with a letter from the local council, correcting parent information, and removing titles or nicknames from registered names.
