Ugandan-English Teen Mukasa Shines at Man City Debut in EFL Cup

At just 18, Divine Mukasa has already shown the football world that age is no barrier to impact. The Ugandan-English midfielder made a sensational senior debut for Manchester City  on  Wednesday, 24th September, 2025, assisting Phil Foden in a 2-0 EFL Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium in the third round.

Mukasa’s debut was the result of years of dedication and hard work in City’s academy. Known for his vision, composure, and incisive passing, he carved open Huddersfield’s defense in the 28th minute to set up Foden’s opener, with Savinho doubling the lead just before halftime.

Born in London to a Ugandan father and Lithuanian mother, Mukasa joined City’s academy from West Ham United in 2023 after captaining the Hammers to FA Youth Cup glory.

Speaking after the game, Mukasa described his debut as unforgettable.

“It is a dream come true. Playing alongside players I have admired for years was incredible. But today felt different, it is the start of something new,” he said excitedly.

Manager Pep Guardiola, who gave first-team debuts to six academy players in the match, praised Mukasa’s maturity and readiness.

“Divine is exceptional, he sees passes that others miss and already has the physical presence of a seasoned player at just 18. Tonight was about giving opportunities, and he grabbed his. We are shaping the future here, and these youngsters are a big part of it,” Guardiola said proudly.

Mukasa’s performance carries added intrigue internationally. Despite more than 20 caps for England’s youth teams from U15 to U20, his senior allegiance remains undecided, with eligibility for Uganda or Lithuania.

The Ugandan-English midfielder’s  journey is a testament to what young footballers can achieve with talent, perseverance, and discipline. His debut was not just a first-team appearance, it was a declaration and bold statement announcing his arrival on football’s grandest stage.
