The Uganda Young Democrats, also known as the Youth Wing of the Democratic Party (DP), have revealed plans to petition the Speaker of Parliament over the need to regulate the ever-increasing school fees.

While speaking to the members of the press on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at City House in Kampala, Ismail Kiirya, the acting Democratic Party Spokesperson, said that the purpose of the petition is to ask the honourable house to introduce a minimum and a maximum fee to be charged by all schools in Uganda.

“Mr. Speaker, sir, we therefore request to be invited to the committees of Parliament as Uganda Young Democrats to present our detailed views about the minimum and maximum fees payments in schools,” Kiirya said.

Kiirya noted that the exorbitant fees are in both government and private schools, which therefore means that parents have no option other than falling prey to these exorbitant charges in the current economy.

In the past few weeks, other opposition parties have also come out to add their voice to the current school fees structures in both private and public schools, where parents have raised alarm that the fees increments have been happening every term and the government seems to do nothing to protect the parents from this seemingly unavoidable expenditure.
