Uganda being home to over 50% of the remaining Mountain Gorillas in the World, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has made a move to help in the conservation of these majestic creatures by introducing My Gorilla Family App.

According to Sam Mwandha, the Uganda Wildlife Authority Executive Director, My Gorilla Family App is aimed at bringing together people from all over the world to connect with and support gorilla conservation as well as reinforce a sustainable conservation strategy.

He noted that, through a subscription of Ugx 7,465 (US$2) per month, people World over will be able to contribute to this noble cause to protect and conserve the gorillas, and subscribers will receive an all access pass to Bwindi-Mgahinga Conservation Area, home to more than 50% of the World’s remaining Mountain Grillas.

Mwandha said that this subscription-based technology will enable anyone to follow many gorilla families knowing that their subscription goes towards protecting the glorious creatures and building local communities around them.

He added that, through the App, people will be able to follow Gorillas daily excursions and family migrations through virtual trekking, celebrate their birthdays, see new births and receive updates from the rangers who protect and know them best. This application is available on both iOS and Android devices.

“This initiative will support us in educating the Local Communities and people from all over the World about the value of protecting these Majestic animals and keeping them for future generations,” Mwandha said.

The Project is expected to employ up to 300 youth in the next three years, skill the community to benefit from gorilla conservation and further generate revenue to boost gorilla tourism in Uganda.
