Uganda will be required to fulfil six conditions ahead of hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), including Ugx 112 billion in hosting fees to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before February 2025.

The Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, revealed this on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, during the parliamentary plenary session, where a special tribute was paid to the successful selection of Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya to host the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

Ogwang noted that AFCON 2027 requires substantial investment in infrastructure for the games, accommodation, air, water, and road transport accessibility.

“We have a plan to build regional stadiums. We need to have funds appropriated to the spot sector. Let us tax these betting firms and channel this money to develop infrastructure. These are expected to yield significant dividends in the short run, medium term, and long term,” Ogwang said.

He noted that, as a country and larger East Africa, we are blessed with this good news and the opportunity to host the AFCON 2027 football competition.

“This is a great milestone in fostering the spirit of cooperation in the East African community,” Ogwang said.

Barnabas Tinkansimire Member of Parliament, Buyaga East constituency, asked the government to copy Qatar, reject anyone who would promote homosexuality during the tournament, and ensure they were not allowed into Uganda.

“As this torment is drawing nearer, we must prepare for the negatives that will come with it. My mind was drawn to an event that happened during the World Cup, where one country flew in with a flag of homosexuality. We must be prepared as a country to stand against such activities and warn participating countries and even those coming that it will not be tolerated here,” said Tinkansimire.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, known as Total Energies 2027 Africa Cup for sponsorship reasons, is scheduled to be the 36th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations and will be hosted by Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya for the first time.
