Uganda is set to host the second annual Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) Conference on June 22 to 23, 2023, at the Kampala Serena Hotel, organized by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

According to Pascal Kwesiga, the Head of Communication in the Office of Prime Minister, Uganda has made various interventions across the 17 SDGs.

He said that it has integrated the goals into its 3rd National Development Plan (NDP), which is designed to increase household income and improve the quality of life through wealth creation, employment creation, and industrialization, among others. Interventions like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and youth livelihood programs, among others, are aimed at achieving these goals.

This year’s conference is under the theme “Promoting Inclusive National and Continental Actions for Accelerated Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2026.”

The main objective of the Conference is to reflect on the mid-term progress made by the integration & implementation of the SDGs & AU Agenda 2063 in order to leverage synergies & articulate transformative pathways to advance.

According to Prime Minister Nabbanja, this conference, which the president will open, will give Uganda an important platform for the stakeholders to assess progress in implementing the third NDP and shape the direction for the fourth National Development Plan.

“Uganda will showcase not only Uganda’s role but also unique steps taken by the government and its partners to implement the development agenda, and H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to open the conference,” said Rt. Hon. Nabbanja.

However, the Communication Officer said there are also interventions aimed at increasing access to clean drinking water and water for production through building irrigation schemes to facilitate commercial agriculture, building more schools and health facilities to increase access to education and health services.

Kwesiga added that, among other advantages, the conference will bring together all stakeholders to reflect on Uganda’s midterm progress in implementing the SDGs (UN 2030 Agenda) and African Union (AU) Agenda 2063. The assessments from this conference will feed into the UN SDG summit scheduled to take place in September.

The annual SDG conference is a domestic platform held annually and was initiated by the Office of the Prime Minister last year. This annual conference was intended for expedited follow-up, review, and validation of progress made on the SDGs Agenda 2030; and the African Union Agenda 2063 with all commitments and recommendations of the second VNR Report.
