Uganda to Host ICC Men’s World Cup Trophy for Four Days

Uganda under the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) is set to host the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s World Cup Trophy which will arrive in Uganda on August 26, 2023.

According to UCA, the ICC Men’s World Cup Trophy will be unveiled by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Minister for Education and Sports on August 27, 2023.

Dennis Musali, the Association’s communication manager said that Uganda is progressing in the field of cricket and hosting the trophy is a significant development in sports.

“This groundbreaking journey reflects Uganda’s incredible progress in the cricket field, with significant consequences echoing across cultural and geographical divisions, we are really happy that Uganda would have the chance to host the Trophy” Musali said.

Musali acknowledged that Uganda might not be a contender in the 2017 Cricket World Cup, but he stressed the nation’s obvious love for the game.

He said that, for four days, the Trophy will stay in Uganda before moved to Nigeria and South Africa.

The ICC World Cup Trophy tour began on June 27, 2023, and is scheduled to go to 18 nations and regions, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, the United States, Nigeria, Uganda, France, Italy, and finally the host country, India.

India will host the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup from October 5th to November 19th. There will be ten teams competing, including the 2019 champions, England.

In conjunction with the Uganda Tourism Board and Bar Aviation, the trophy will start its trip in Kampala, move on to Jinja on Monday, August 28, 2023, and end on the 29th, at Parliament of Uganda.

According to the Uganda Cricket Association, the trophy will be named “Walugembe Nagenda,” a tribute to Sam Walusimbi and John Nagenda, the only Ugandans who played in the 1975 World Cup in England.
