Uganda to Host 2nd Edition of Housing Symposium on World Habitat Day

Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Lands Housing and Urban Development has said that, Uganda will be hosting the second edition of Uganda Housing Symposium in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Uganda.

This was revealed by Nabakooba during a press conference on Monday, October 2, 2023, at Uganda Media Centre (UMC), that Uganda will join the rest of the world to commemorate World Habitat Day, with the Uganda Housing Symposium on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Mestil Hotel in Nsambya, Kampala.

The day is dedicated to spotlight, with the Uganda Housing Conference and under the theme, Resilient Urban Economies. Cities as Drivers of Growth and Recovery.

According to Nabakooba, that General Assembly resolution of December 17, 1985 set aside the first Monday of October each year to be observed worldwide as World Habitat Day.

“Uganda is marking this day on Thursday 5th October 2023, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Uganda that will be hosting the second edition of the Uganda Housing in order to allow the partners to fully participate,” Nabakooba said.

She noted that, the conference provides countries, communities and all stakeholders in the housing sector an opportunity to reflect on the state of human settlement and the basic human right to adequate shelter.

Nabakooba said that, the day will act as a venue for showcasing and discussing innovative solutions to accessible, inclusive, affordable and descent housing.

She clarified that, the government will use the occasion to urge all the stakeholders to address the challenges facing affordable housing across all communities in the country.

The First National Housing Symposium was held in October, 2022, and the stakeholders endorsed that, a National level forum be jointly convened annually to bring all key actors together to address the escalating housing deficit.
