Uganda has been selected by the Continental Rugby governing body, Africa Rugby, to host the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Rugby Africa Cup.

Rugby Africa is the administrative body for rugby unions within the continent of Africa under the authority of World Rugby, which is the world-governing body of rugby unions.

This was announced by the State Minister of Sports, Peter Ogwang, on Thursday, February 22, 2024.

“Africa Rugby has unanimously accepted Uganda’s bid to host the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Rugby Africa Cup at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole,” Minister Ogwang said.

He said the current renovations at Namboole cater for several other sports disciplines, including rugby, and that Uganda is ready to start hosting both local and international games.

“To ensure readiness, this morning I inspected the rugby playing field at Namboole, together with the President of the Uganda Rugby Union. Special thanks to H.E. President Kaguta and the Minister of Education and Sports, Mama Janet Museveni, for their unwavering support in making this possible,” he added.

Ogwang described the decision by Africa Rugby as a vote of confidence in Uganda.

The Rugby Africa Cup is a two-year men’s rugby union tournament involving the top 16 African nations based on their World Rugby rankings.

The tournament was first held in 2000 and was renamed the Rugby Africa Cup in November 2019. It was previously called the Africa Cup.

Uganda is the current holder of the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Cup, having beaten Zimbabwe to the title in 2023.
