The spokesperson for the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC), Simon Peter Mundeyi, said that negotiations were underway to secure visa-free travel to South Africa.

Addressing the press at the Weekly Security Briefing at the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Mundeyi stated that the development could soon make border crossings between the two nations seamless.

“The Ugandan passport can now make more entries to other countries than ever before,” Mundeyi declared. “We are in talks with the South African government to ensure our citizens can travel there without visas. Expect good news soon.”

Mundeyi also shared updates on Uganda’s evolving citizenship landscape. In the 2024/25 year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, through the DCIC, granted citizenship to 1,721 individuals.

Among them were nationals from India, Britain, Germany, and the United States—people who have woven their lives into Uganda’s fabric.

“These are individuals of good conduct who have embraced Uganda as their own,” Mundeyi noted.

Over 158,000 unclaimed Ugandan passports have been destroyed after lingering in storage for more than six months, despite repeated advertisements urging owners to collect them.

Uganda is opening doors, both for its citizens to explore the world and for the world to find a home within its borders.

With South Africa potentially on the cusp of becoming visa-free and citizenship rolls expanding, the nation is poised for a new chapter of connection and mobility.
