The Ministry of Health has clarified on the alleged report suggesting a COVID-19 situation resurgence in Uganda.
On Wednesday, 11th June 2025, Dr. Charles Olaro, the Director General of Health Services, said there is no resurgence of COVID-19 in Uganda and the national situation is stable and fully under control since the major outbreak three years ago.
Dr. Olara said the circulating messages are old clips being re-shared by unscrupulous individuals to mislead the members of the public.
“The ministry has consistently monitored trends to ensure early detection and prompt response. The ministry continues to monitor information about the new strains of COVID-19 being reported around the world and is working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued safety of the population,” said Dr. Olara.
He says Uganda continues to benefit from a strong surveillance and response system, which has been built over time and remains fully active and capable of detecting and addressing public health threats.
The ministry remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of all Ugandans and encourages the public to maintain good hygiene and practices, including washing hands with clean water and soap or using an alcohol-based sanitizer, and to remain alert to credible updates from the official sources.
On Tuesday, Dr. Col Henry Kyobe, the COVID-19 incident commander in the Ministry of Health, said what their surveillance teams are seeing and the trends in cases testing positive for the viral disease are not unique from what has been happening over the past year.
Kyobe said they have been picking only dozens of positives from thousands of samples tested regularly for pneumonia-related illnesses.
Claims of a new lethal variant of COVID-19 followed reports from the Bullisa district that ten oil workers under the Tilenga project area, being operated by TotalEnergies, had tested positive during a testing exercise within the camp.
