A section of Ugandan traders dealing in milk and sugar businesses have resumed operations with Kenya following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by the two presidents.

While in Kenya two weeks ago, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni signed several MOUs with his Kenyan counterpart, President William Samoei Ruto, including strengthening trade ties and security, among others.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Odrek Rwabogo, the Presidential Advisor on Special Duties, confirmed through his office that milk and sugar businesses that had previously been halted between Uganda and Kenya have finally resumed.

“Good news as a section of Ugandan sugar and milk businesses resume trading with Kenya after the signing of the MoU by Presidents William Ruto and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in Nairobi recently, ending longstanding issues chocking cross-border commercial activities,” Rwabogo said.

He said that the two leaders have agreed to resolve trade wars by adhering to East African Community protocols on the Customs Union and the Common Market.

Uganda and Kenya have had on-and-off disagreements regarding the export and import of milk, sugar, and poultry products, among others, between the two countries.
