Uganda Eyes More Medals at African Games: Boxing, Football, Athletics in Focus

Uganda has the opportunity to increase its medal tally, particularly in track and field events, boxing, and football, while the Men’s Rugby Cranes 7s team begins their quest for gold.

This is in addition to the eight medals Uganda has so far won, including two golds in badminton and cycling, three silvers in weightlifting, and three bronzes in swimming and weightlifting.

Several Ugandan athletes will compete on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The Uganda Hippos U20 Men’s Football team has a chance to make history as they face Congo Brazzaville in the semifinals at 8:00 p.m. at Accra Sports Stadium.

In boxing at Bukom Boxing Arena, following a successful Monday in which Muzamiru Semuddu and Kasim Murungi advanced to the semi-finals, there will be a pursuit for more glory.

Erina Namutebi will face Cynthia Ogunsemilore of Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the women’s 60 kg category on Tuesday evening at 8:30 p.m.

Isaac Owen Kibira will take on Tunisian Zakaria Romdhani in the men’s 67 kg weight category at 12:15 p.m.

In athletics at the University of Ghana Stadium, Shida Leni qualified for the women’s 400m semifinals in 53:42 and hopes to advance to the finals at 7:30 p.m. while Haron Adoli, who qualified with a time of 46.21, is also aiming for a spot in the final at 7:50 p.m.

Winifred Atimango will compete in the final of the Women’s Triple Jump against ten other athletes.

Halima Nakaayi and Susan Aneno qualified for the final of the 800m that will take place today at 10:05 p.m.

Tom Dradiga advanced to the semifinals after finishing third in heat 4 with a time of 1:47.55. He will compete at 10:20 p.m.

Uganda will compete in Heat 1 of the men’s 4x100m relay, along with Mauritius, Ethiopia, Kenya, The Gambia, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Togo.

In Basketball 3X3 at Legon Netball Court, Uganda’s women’s basketball team will face Nigeria in the first game at 7:20 p.m., then Togo three hours later.

Rugby 7s will be played at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, where the Uganda Rugby Cranes will play their first game against Burkina Faso at 2:22 p.m. followed by Tunisia at 5:44 p.m. The tournament will follow a round-robin format, with each team playing six games.

In cricket, the Uganda Cricket Cranes will face South Africa in their third game after defeating the host nation, Ghana, and neighbouring Kenya.
