The Uganda Cranes are just one point away from making history by qualifying for their first-ever quarter-final at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

The Cranes will face South Africa on Monday in their final Group C match. After Friday’s results, Uganda leads the group with 6 points, followed by Algeria, Guinea, South Africa, and Niger.

Algeria drew 1-1 with Guinea, while South Africa was held to a 0-0 draw by Niger. These results mean that a draw against South Africa will guarantee Uganda a spot in the quarter-finals. If Uganda loses, their fate will depend on the outcome of the Algeria vs Niger match.

Uganda’s journey in this tournament has been remarkable. After a heavy 3-0 loss to Algeria in the opening game, the Cranes bounced back in style, defeating Guinea 3-0 and Niger 2-0. This is the first time in CHAN history that Uganda has won two consecutive matches — a major milestone for the national team.

Unfortunately, midfielder Sserunjogi will miss Monday’s game due to suspension after receiving two yellow cards. Despite this setback, he remains hopeful.

“I wish I could play, but I trust my teammates. Whoever steps in will give their best,” he said.

Historically, South Africa has had the upper hand in this fixture, winning four of the last six matches between the two sides. However, with strong team spirit and discipline, the Cranes believe they can rise to the occasion.

Monday’s match is about more than just reaching the next round. It’s a chance for Uganda to make history and elevate the country’s football profile on the continental stage.

The nation now waits in anticipation as the Cranes look to write a new chapter in Ugandan football.
