Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has commenced Uganda’s preparations to host the Gumzo la ADR Conference 2026, a major continental event focused on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

The conference, scheduled for March 9–13, 2026, at Mestil hotel Kampala, themed “Gumzo La Edyara” aims to promote the practical application of mediation, arbitration, and other non-litigious methods to resolve disputes.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao explained that ADR mechanisms could significantly reduce the backlog of cases in Uganda’s courts while offering faster, more affordable, and less adversarial solutions for individuals and businesses.

“With trade and investment on the rise across Africa, the need for robust dispute resolution systems is clearer than ever,” Mao stated.

He noted that the event would bring together legal experts, policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders from across the continent to share best practices and strengthen ADR frameworks.

According to Mao, the conference is a timely opportunity for Uganda to showcase its commitment to justice sector reforms and alternative mechanisms that align with evolving economic realities on the continent.

Mao’s appearance in the media comes amid his ongoing political activities, including his declared candidacy for Speaker of the 12th Parliament following the recent general elections.

However, his press interaction centered primarily on the upcoming ADR conference rather than domestic parliamentary contests.

The Gumzo la ADR Conference is organized in collaboration with regional bodies, including entities focused on dispute resolution and access to justice. Officials from the Ministry and partners expressed optimism that the event would foster greater adoption of ADR in Uganda and beyond.
