The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is on track to fully operationalize its approved staffing structure, having successfully recruited 96% of its target workforce.

According to UEDCL Spokesperson and Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs, Jonan Kiiza, the company has onboarded 2,604 employees out of the 2,712 positions approved by shareholders.

Speaking to journalists on June 10, 2025, Kiiza gave an account of the success of the mass recruitment exercise that began earlier this year.

“At the beginning of the year, we commenced a mass recruitment exercise targeting to fill our approved structure of 2,712 employees. I am pleased to report we’ve done justice to that structure with 96% recruitment completion nationwide,” Kiiza said.

The company is currently focused on filling the remaining 4% of positions, which require specialized skills.

Kiiza noted that UEDCL is expanding its recruitment efforts beyond traditional talent pools, including former staff from Umeme, to find the right expertise for these roles.

“For the outstanding 4%, we’re looking beyond our traditional talent pools of Umeme and UEDCL to find the right expertise,” he explained.

In addition to the recruitment efforts, UEDCL has also launched a training center in Njeru aimed at enhancing the competencies of its workforce.

The training facility, which is currently operational, will focus on energy-related disciplines and is expected to eventually be open to the public for skill development in the sector.

“We’ve established a fully operational training institute that will soon be opened to the public. This will allow Ugandans to acquire skills in energy-related fields, further strengthening our sector,” Kiiza revealed.

With staffing nearly complete, UEDCL is better positioned to fulfill its mandate of efficient power distribution across the country.

UEDCL announced that it has absorbed over 90 percent of former Umeme staff into its workforce, signaling a decisive continuity plan following UMEME’s withdrawal from the country’s electricity distribution operations.
