The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has cautioned broadcasters against using radio and television platforms to dispute officially declared election results, warning that such actions are unlawful and threaten public order and the integrity of Uganda’s democracy.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 10th February, 2026, UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo said he had observed a growing trend where candidates who have failed to win parliamentary or local government seats attempt to challenge election outcomes through broadcast media, often relying on sensational or unverified claims.
“The Electoral Commission is the sole constitutional authority responsible for declaring election results. Candidates dissatisfied with outcomes must seek redress through the courts by filing election petitions within the legally prescribed timelines,” Hon. Thembo emphasized.
UCC cautioned that airing parallel tallies, unverified results, or speculative allegations can spark public panic, create confusion, weaken trust in democratic institutions and potentially incite unrest, damaging Uganda’s democratic reputation both locally and internationally.
Hon. Thembo directed all broadcasters to exercise strict editorial oversight, ensuring that all election-related content is verified against official Electoral Commission sources.
“Broadcast media should not serve as alternative venues for litigating election disputes. UCC will take decisive enforcement action against any broadcaster found violating existing laws and guidelines,” the UCC statement read.
The regulator also called on media owners, editors, and the public to use broadcast platforms responsibly, in ways that promote national unity, respect the law, and uphold democratic integrity.
UCC’s warning highlights the critical role of responsible media in safeguarding Uganda’s democracy.
By ensuring that election information is accurate and verified, broadcasters, media owners, and the public can help maintain peace, protect public trust, and uphold the nation’s democratic values.
