The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has urged media practitioners to undergo leadership and capacity-building training at Kyankwanzi as part of efforts to strengthen responsible reporting in the run-up to the 2026 general elections.
Speaking during a meeting with media sector managers on 22nd August, 2025, in Bugolobi, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said the initiative is designed to equip journalists with the skills and perspective needed to inform the public while safeguarding peace and security during the election period.
“Journalists are key partners in national development and in preserving peace during elections. Taking them to Kyankwanzi for orientation will enhance their understanding of the country’s priorities and encourage responsible coverage,” Nyombi said.
He stressed that the program is not only about professional growth but also about patriotism and appreciating the responsibilities that come with press freedom, especially in politically sensitive times.
“Media practitioners need to understand the broader national context in which they operate. This training will help them report responsibly, supporting peace and stability without compromising journalistic integrity,” he added.
UCC has asked the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to fast-track implementation of the initiative, noting its potential to deepen journalists’ appreciation of Uganda’s socio political landscape.
The proposal has sparked debate in media circles. While some see it as a valuable opportunity for professional development, others caution that it could pose risks to editorial independence. Still, the move reflects a growing effort to ensure that media coverage contributes to peaceful, informed, and credible elections in 2026.
