The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has revealed that 99% of the population was counted in the 2024 National Housing and Population Census (NHPC) and that only 1% was missed due to various factors, including absent household members and refusal to participate.
This was revealed by the UBOS Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza, on May 28, 2024, while addressing the media at the statistics house in Kampala.
“By the close of enumeration on Sunday, May 26, 2024, the overall coverage was 99%, with the remaining percentage attributed to residents in gates that were not accessible, working single household members, plus those that refused to be enumerated,” Dr. Mukiza said.
He said that the Bureau is to stick to the census roadmap approved by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as it embarks on data processing, editing, and analysis of the raw data collected.
Accordingly, the preliminary results of the 2024 Census will be disseminated on June 24, 2024, followed by provisional results on September 24, 2024, and the final report on December 24, 2024.
Mukiza added that, in line with internationally accepted best practices, UBOS will conduct a Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) in July 2024 with the aim of validating the coverage and quality of data collected during the census.
Uganda conducted the 2024 Census from May 9–29, 2024, across the country during an exercise that was supported by multiple government agencies, including the Internal Security Organization, and local government (districts and sub-counties), among others.
During the exercise, President Museveni maintained the importance of the census, saying that it guides national planning, a move he said is critical to the government.
